Nicolas Jackson of Chelsea reacts after a missed chance against Man City

Chelsea have been knocked out of the FA Cup after losing 1-0 to Manchester City in the semi-final at Wembley Stadium.

Despite a positive first-half display from Chelsea, the two sides went in goalless at the break. Nicolas Jackson had the best chance of the half from a Blues perspective after he rounded Stefan Ortega, but he decided to check back and lay it off rather than shoot on his weaker left foot.

In the second-half, Michael Oliver waved away a massive penalty shout from Chelsea after the ball hit Jack Grealish’s arm inside the box. Cole Palmer struck the ball from a free-kick and Grealish’s extended arm made contact with the ball but after a brief VAR check, nothing was given.

With less than 10 minutes of normal time to go, Man City made Chelsea pay for their missed opportunities. Bernardo Silva tapped in from close-range after a cross from Kevin De Bruyne.

It was really cruel on Chelsea, whose Wembley hoodoo continues. Below, Bobby Vincent rates the Chelsea players.

Players Ratings

Djordje Petrovic – 6

Petrovic does really well to force Phil Foden wide in what was City’s best chance of the first-half. Foden got on the end of a great pass from Kevin De Bruyne and he rounded Petrovic, but the Serbian’s lunge at the Englishman forced him wide and meant he could not convert the ball into the goal. A good save on 53 minutes to deny Foden.

Malo Gusto – 6

Gusto was not at his absolute best this afternoon. There were, though, a couple of nice tackles to lift the crowd. Notably that one on De Bruyne in the first-half.

Trevoh Chalobah – 6

Chalobah is in great form, isn’t he? Another top performance from the Cobham graduate in one of the most difficult games of the season.

Thiago Silva – 6

Silva had a shaky start on the ball with City clearly targeting the 39-year-old in their press. However, inevitably, Silva grew into it and played superbly once again. A few crucial tackles, blocks and clearances from the Brazilian.

Marc Cucurella – 6

Cucurella did really well. The biggest compliment you can give the Spaniard is having a look at how quiet and ineffective Bernardo Silva was on Man City’s right-hand side, bar the goal.

Moises Caicedo – 6

Caicedo did well, played on the front foot. Makes too many silly fouls in dangerous areas, though, which puts Chelsea under some unnecessary pressure sometimes.

Enzo Fernandez – 6

Fernandez grew into the game as it went on. A couple of long diagonal passes that remind you of the Argentine’s undoubted talent.

Noni Madueke – 5

Madueke was nowhere near as involved as he would have liked. A couple of nice moments but not enough on the right wing.

Cole Palmer – 6

Palmer was quieter than usual. City seemed to have a plan to deal with him – understandably – and it somewhat worked. However, he definitely grew into the game. The 21-year-old had a much better second-half where he was beginning to make things happen from a Blues perspective.

Conor Gallagher – 7

Presses really well. He was on Rodri’s case all of the time. Perhaps not involved in possession as much as he or Mauricio Pochettino would have liked out on the left wing, but a workmanlike performance from the captain yet again.

Nicolas Jackson – 5

Jackson was positive all afternoon-long at Wembley, but he misses a fantastic opportunity to open the scoring in the first-half – one he has simply got to be scoring. He then misses two golden chances at the start of the second-half. A wasteful afternoon from Chelsea’s #15.
